1. What is infertility ?

Most couples will have a  strong wish to enjoy the pleasures of parenthood at some point during their lifetime.  Most couples (approximately 90% ) will achieve pregnancy within one year of trying, with the greatest likelihood of conception generally occurring within the earlier months.Only an additional 7% of couples will conceive in the second year.As a result, infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within 12 months of having unprotected sex. it’s  generally recommended to seek help from a reproductive endocrinologist. if conception has not occurred within 12 months, then there are chances that either or both of the partner are having some issue resulting in the failure to conceive.

2. What are the risk factors ?

A risk factor is something that makes a person more likely to develop a condition, in this case, it’s infertility. Some risk factors are listed below :

  • Age: A  man’s and woman’s fertility gradually declines with age. As a woman gets older, the number and quality of her eggs decrease. Men over age 40 are also less fertile than younger men.
  • Tobacco and alcohol use: The use of tobacco or alcohol reduces the chances of pregnancy. Women who smoke have a higher rate of miscarriage.
  • Body weight: The chance of infertility increases when the person doesn’t have an ideal body weight. Healthy eating habits are recommended.
  • Exercise:  too much or too little exercise is going to contribute to a risk of infertility. In some cases, a frequent exercise that is intense can affect a woman’s ovulation patterns. This can lead to a lack of monthly periods.
  • Irregular periods: Irregular periods are common in woman who is underweight or overweight. Healthy eating habits with proper exercise regime are of huge importance.

3. What are the common signs or symptoms of infertility in woman ?

For females, the common signs would be abnormal periods, irregularity in periods in terms of days in between each period, painful periods followed by back pain or pelvic pain or no periods at all. While other times there could be hormonal issues, in that case, the evident symptoms would be skin changes, change in sex drive, dark hair growth on the lips or chin, sudden weight gain or loss, and thinning of hair.

  • What Treatment Do You Recommend First, and How Long Will We Try This?
  • Are There Side Effects to This Treatment?
  • What is Your Success Rate With This Treatment

6. How do doctors treat infertility ?

Doctors recommend specific treatments for infertility based on:

  • Test results
  • How long the couple has been trying to get pregnant
  • The age of both the male and female
  • The overall health of the partners
  • Preference of the partners

Infertility can be treated with medicine, surgery, artificial insemination or any needed reproductive technology. Many times these treatments are combined. About two-thirds of the couples who are treated for infertility are able to have a baby. In most cases, infertility is treated with drugs or surgery.

Various fertility medicines are often used to treat women with ovulation problems. It is important to talk with your doctor about the pros and cons of these medicines. You should understand the risks, benefits, and side effects.
