Following are the most common changes that can be fetched with rhinoplasty

Advantages of undergoing a Rhinoplasty procedure

Disadvantages of undergoing a Rhinoplasty procedure

Candidates who can undergo a Rhinoplasty

Anyone can undergo a Rhinoplasty procedure, but candidates must make sure that their nose bone has grown completely. Girls who are above 15 and boys above 16 can undergo a Rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of their nose. The candidates opting for a Rhinoplasty procedure must surely be in a good health condition and they must keep a realistic expectation from the procedure. It is very important to remember that the patients must not expect to achieve perfect nose because Rhinoplasty can only improve the condition of the nose.

Is the surgery safe for teenagers?

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular and common cosmetic surgeries not only among adults but also among the teens. It is a preferred procedure since it involves the least risks while reshaping the nose. By undergoing a Rhinoplasty people can easily alter the shape, size and overall appearance of the nose. However the doctors suggest these age groups to wait until 15 or 16 when the nose bone have matured completely, else rhinoplasty results may undergo certain changes.

Preparing for Rhinoplasty surgery

Before undergoing a Rhinoplasty surgery, the candidates must meet the surgeon to discuss the procedure. Moreover, the surgeon will also analyse the condition of the candidate to ensure whether or not they are eligible for the procedure. The surgeon will then examine the medical history, physical exam of the candidates. Some blood tests or other lab tests may also be required to perform before undergoing the procedure. The patients may be considered if any additional surgery is required since some people may choose to get a chin augmentation along with rhinoplasty.

The surgeon will explain everything about the procedure including the risks, recovery, and cost of the procedure. The pre-op instructions provided by the surgeon must be followed minutely. Surgeons may ask their patients to avoid taking certain painkillers like ibuprofen or aspirin for about two weeks before the procedure because medications like this can slow down the healing and increase the bleeding. Candidates who are addicted to smoking may face difficulties during the healing period. So it is always desired to give up smoking six weeks before and after undergoing the procedure. The nicotine content of cigarettes slows down the healing process by constricting the blood vessels which in turn results in less oxygen and blood that is required for healing the tissues. So quitting smoking is probably the best option.

Rhinoplasty surgical procedure

Rhinoplasty is mostly performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. In very rare and complicated cases the surgeon may choose general anesthesia for the candidates. It is a very simple procedure where the surgeon may either choose a closed or open rhinoplasty approach. A closed rhinoplasty is that where the incisions are kept hidden inside the nose, whereas in an open rhinoplasty approach the incisions are made across the columella. Columella is that narrow strip of the tissue that separates the nostril. Through these incisions, the skin above the nasal bone is elevated gently by allowing an easy access to the internal features so that the structure can be reshaped.

To rectify an overly large nose, the underlying bone or cartilage may be reduced by removing or adding some additional cartilage grafts. Most commonly the cartilage of the septum is used, but ear or rib cartilage may also be used. For rectifying a deviated septum, the condition can be improved which will also aid in an improved breathing. Finally, when the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted to the desired structure, the nasal skin and tissue may be re-draped and the incisions are sutured up. Any additional incisions may also be required for altering the shape of the nose and these incisions are mostly placed within the natural creases of the nose.

Recovering from a Rhinoplasty

After undergoing a Rhinoplasty surgery, splints and gauzes are packed to provide support to the nose during the recovery period. This splint will help the nose to attain its new shape and also to stabilize the septum. The patients after undergoing the procedure are kept in the recovery room for monitoring for at least few hours after the surgery. The patients are instructed to bring someone who can drive them home since the anesthesia effect may make them feel groggy. For complicated cases, the patients may also require staying in the hospital for a day or two.

The post-op instructions provided by the surgeon may include sleeping with head elevated to reduce swelling and bleeding. The nose is mostly packed with cotton and splints which may make you feel congested, but the dressing is kept for about a week after the surgery. The surgeons use dissolvable stitches in the nose so patients do not have to remove the stitches and will provide some medications for pain and some antibiotics to help the patients to recover completely.

Patients can return to normal activities within a week. But other activities like running, swimming, blowing nose, laughing, smiling, vigorous tooth brushing, etc. may be avoided for few weeks after the procedure. Overexposing the nose to the sun may result in permanent discolouration of the skin around the nose.

Patients after undergoing a Rhinoplasty procedure may also find temporary numbness and swelling around the eyes and eyelids for few weeks. Some cold compress may help to alleviate conditions like this.

Risks associated with Rhinoplasty

Just like any other surgical procedure, there are some potential risks which are always associated with any surgical procedure. Following the potential complications of Rhinoplasty-

For cases of undesirable results, the patients may choose to undergo a second revision surgical procedure after a year or more when the nose has fully recovered.

Results of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a safe procedure but the healing may take some time. The tip of the nose may remain sensitive or numb or swollen for few months after the procedure. Some parts of the result may be visible immediately after the procedure but the final result may take few months or up to a year for complete recovery.
