Breast Augmentation

A breast augmentation is often referred to as boob job by most of the patients that can be performed by either using breast implants or by autologous fat transfer to augment the breast size remarkably. Often women are left behind with loose, sagging shrunk breasts after pregnancy, breastfeeding or major weight loss. So they may choose to undergo a breast augmentation surgery to restore the lost volume after weight reduction or pregnancy to achieve an improved natural breast size.

A breast augmentation can successfully

Limitations of breast augments

Breast augmentation is not responsible for correcting severely sagging breasts. So to rectify such severely sagging breast, a breast lift surgery will be most useful to accomplish the fuller appearance of the breasts. Surgeons or patients may also choose breast lifting while performing breast augmentation, though a separate surgical procedure may also be required.

Candidates for breast augmentation using implants

What are the breast implants that can be used?

Women may use breast implants to make their breasts appear bigger and fuller. There are two types of breast implants that are commonly used- saline implants and silicone implants. Saline implants are made up of silicone shells that are filled with sterile saline water and other materials during the operation of the implant. Whereas, the silicone gel-filled implants are silicone shells filled with silicone gel. Silicone gel implants are FDA approved and are preferred by most of the women since it carries the least risk of rupture of the implants. Additionally, the silicone gel implants feel and appear natural with a smoother and even texture.

Breast Augmentation using implants procedural steps

At the beginning of the procedure, the candidates are administered with required medications and general anesthesia to ensure that the candidates do not feel any discomfort or pain.

Then the surgeons make incisions on the inconspicuous areas to minimize the visibility of scarring. The surgeon will probably discuss the position of the incisions and its probable outcome. The incision options include making incisions on the areolar edge, under the breast fold, in the armpit, etc. Often surgeons may also choose to make a belly button approach but for higher complications. The incisions vary depending on the type of breast implant used, the required degree of fullness required, the anatomy of the patient and other varying factors.

Next, the surgeon places the implants depending on the degree of enhancement required. The incisions may be placed under the pectoral muscle or directly behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle. The process for insertion of the implants depends on the type of the implant used and the degree of enhancement desired.

After the insertion of the implants, the incisions are closed with layered sutures and then they are sutured with skin adhesives and bandages. It is mostly been seen that the incision lines fade away after recovery. The surgeons will provide with numerous post-op instructions which include abstaining from nicotine, alcohol to avoid infections or other rising complications. The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible but the final results will be visible when the swelling and bruising will fade away totally.

Recovery

The breasts are usually covered with gauze after the surgery. The surgeon may also use drainage tubes which may be removed within few days. A compression surgical bra may also be used to enhance the healing. The candidates can resume normal activities within a week. Vigorous physical activities must be avoided up to six weeks. The surgeon will also provide with some medications like antibiotics and medications of pain to alleviate any discomfort, pain, and swelling.

Complications

Overall a breast augmentation is extremely a safe procedure, but every surgical procedure includes some complications. similarly, the possible complications included in breast surgery includes anaesthesia risks, bleeding, infections, changes in nipple sensation, poor scarring, leakage or rupture of the implant, hematoma, seroma, persistent pain and poor healing.

Breast augmentation with autologous fat transfer

The breast augmentation by using fat transfer is a simple procedure that includes removing the fat cells meritoriously from various parts of the body where the fat cells are in abundance like tummy, buttocks, thighs, etc. The autologous fat transfer is also popular as fat grafting which was first used to enhance and reconstruct the breasts. Enhancing breast with fat transfer will not help in achieving remarkable breast fullness but it will provide the most natural appearance.

Candidates for fat grafting

The autologous fat transfer is considered as an option for women who desires to improve the appearance of the breasts after undergoing a treatment for breast cancer. The procedure can also be very helpful to repair cases related to the breast augmentation using implants and other related issues like wrinkling or rippling of the skin. Most importantly the potential candidates must also have sufficient fat in other areas of the body to be transferred to the breasts.

Fat transfer procedural steps

The fat transfer procedure involves two main procedures and those are collecting and injecting. The fat cells are extracted through several types of liposuction procedure like laser liposuction, ultrasound liposuction, assisted liposuction or other liposuction techniques. After collecting fat through a syringe, the cells are processed to separate out it from other medical fluids. The surgeon basically aims at obtaining a significant amount of healthy fat so that it can involve the least chances of infections.

However, after the fat is being processed they are carefully injected into the breasts with dozens of injections into the space between the skin and the breast capsule or in the chest wall. The surgeons perform this procedure meticulously to sculpt the breast in a new desired breast contour.

To accomplish the best-desired result from the procedure, some surgeons may also instruct their patients to wear a tissue expander prior to the procedure. This system helps in generating a vacuum that applies a gentle pull on the breasts which in the cells to replicate and gradually create a new tissue throughout the entire breast area.

Recovery

The candidates undergoing Breast augmentation via autologous fat transfer normally requires 2 to 4 days for recovery which is quicker than normal breast implant surgery. The entire procedure usually takes about three hours to complete, though it depends on the number of donor areas and the desired result. Most of the results are visible immediately after the surgery. The breasts usually appear fuller and natural, though the final result will become visible when all the swelling has subsided after few weeks.

Complications

Breast augmentation via fat transfer is relatively a safe procedure yet it may include some side effects like the formation of cysts, infections, the death of the fat cells, infection, etc. The patients may require a touch-up after the completion of the procedure to accomplish an improved appearance.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is such a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the tissues and skin from the breasts to reshape and reduce the size of the breasts. This procedure is also popular as mammoplasty which can also effectively relocate and reduce the areolar region. Breast reduction surgery is particularly beneficial for women with excessively large breasts because large breasts can be the origin to create neck, back pain, and other physical symptoms which are considered as a breast reduction surgery. Men who are suffering from gynecomastia may also wish to undergo a breast reduction to achieve a flat bosom.

Candidates suitable for breast reduction

It has often been noticed that women with overly large breasts may give rise to certain health and emotional discomfort, lack of self-confidence, physical pain, infection, and rashes. In fact, the extra weight of the excess breast tissues may also detriment the ability to lead an active life such that physical activities become impossible. Women suffering from such conditions can choose to undergo a breast reduction surgery.

Procedural steps

Brest reduction surgery is usually performed by making incisions on the breasts. The surgeons administer the patients with general anesthesia to make sure that the candidates experience no pain. In some cases, the procedure may also be accompanied by fat removal through liposuction along with tissue excision procedure. The amount of fat and breast tissues to be removed depends on the individual condition of the patient, composition of the breasts, amount of reduction desired, personal preferences, etc.

For breast reduction with tissue excision procedure, the incision lines mostly remain visible and the scars are permanent. Though the surgeons mostly make the scars in such a way that the scars may remain hidden within a swimsuit or innerwear. The incision pattern mostly includes-

Now through these incisions, the extra breast tissues are removed and the areola and the nipple may be repositioned if required. The underlying breast tissues are often elevated and reshaped also for cases of extremely large pendulous breasts. At the end of the procedure, the incisions are sutured up. Skin adhesives or surgical tapes are used to provide support to the breast contour. The incision lines will be visible but will fade away gradually with time.

Recovery

The result of the breast reduction surgery is typically noticeable proximately after the completion of the procedure. But the final result will be observable when the post-surgical swelling will no longer exist. The patients undergoing a breast reduction surgery will require a week off from work for recovery. For a safe recovery, it is always desired to follow the post-op instruction that is provided by the surgeon. The surgeon may instruct their patients to avoid strenuous activities for at least a month after undergoing the surgery.

Most of the patients experience some amount of pain and discomfort after the surgical procedure which is quite normal. To alleviate situations like that, the surgeon may also prescribe some painkillers to reduce the pain.

Complications

A breast reduction may include some side effects like scarring, though the scars will mostly fade away with time. Other complications may include numbness, pain, swelling, poor wound healing etc.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is also a kind of breast surgery that helps the patients to achieve a more pleasing and aesthetically breast contour. This procedure can effectively address a sagging and uneven breast with reduced breast volume and drooping nipples by recreating a youthful breast shape. A breast lift procedure involves the removal of excess, stretched out skin for reshaping the breast tissue and repositioning the nipple and areola.

However, the results obtained from a breast lift surgery mostly diminishes over time due to the effect of gravity and age. Additionally, the procedure leaves behind some scars which will fade away with time and can also be hidden easily within clothing. But the patients must choose to undergo a breast lift procedure after completing the pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Often surgeons may choose to perform breast augmentation and breast lift on the same procedure. But the results are not permanent. This surgical procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and is more or less a safe procedure. Patients can return to normal activities within the first week after undergoing the breast lift surgery.
