Healthy Foods And Beverages That Protect Your Eyes From Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition which is the result of several diseases related to eyes which causes subtle loss of peripheral vision and eventually can cause irreversible blindness in the patient if not treated on time. It generally occurs when the nerve connecting brain and eye called optic nerve gets damaged due to excessive intraocular pressure, which happens due to improper drainage of fluid inside the eye. This optic nerve transmits light-generated nerve impulses to the brain which it receives from the retina, and this is how we recognize those electrical signals as vision. Sometimes this disease is also caused by poor regulation of blood flow to the optic nerve. As glaucoma is very common diseases and one of the leading cause of permanent blindness, its prevention is also very important. The safest way of prevention is to always eat a healthy, well-balanced diet and talk to your doctor about what is best for you. Foods with a high level of antioxidants like Lutein, Zeaxanthin, zinc, vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are very good for the health of your eye. So here we will be talking about such healthy food and drinks which can help us in protecting our eyes from glaucoma as making some lifestyle changes can help you prevent the loss of vision.

Eggs – eggs contain a high level of lutein and zeaxanthin and also they are rich in omega 3 fatty acid. Eating an egg daily is very good for eye and it is also most readily available. But you should first ask your doctor before starting to eat, especially when you have diabetes.

Walnuts – Walnuts are also good for your eyes and Pistachios too. They are converted to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), which is an omega-3 fatty acid used by the eye, along with DHA. They also contain antioxidants and vitamin E. It prevents inflammation by lowering a marker C reactive protein that signals the inflammation in the body and preserves cardiovascular health. Include some walnut in your breakfast daily for better health.

Tea – According to researchers, tea has antioxidants and flavonoids which can help to protect the retinal cells from being damaged by free radicals. Some studies have proved that drinking tea will lower the chances of glaucoma to a great degree.

Berries – During world war II, pilots used to eat blueberries daily as they trusted its ability to improve night vision, which was later proved also. Hence blueberries are also called “the vision fruit.” It contains pigment rich antioxidants which can restore the macular pigment in our eyes and also protect it. They also contain anthocyanin, a substance which prevents from inflammation and oxidative stress in our eyes. Apart from blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, mulberries, cherries and even grapes are great for protecting our eyes.

Fish Oil – this is well established that omega-3 fatty acids are best for your eyes and fish oil is abundant in omega-3. Fish oil prevents many diseases and heals injuries to eyes. It also prevents from dry eye disease.

Kale – it is also rich in beta-carotenoids like zeaxanthin and lutein. Its consumption is beneficial for eyes it prevents macular degeneration, cataracts, as well as other eye disorders.

Seeds and Nuts – Seeds and nuts like Hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds and sunflower seeds are also an excellent food for the protection of our eyes. They are rich in zinc and Vitamin E and lower the chances of various eye diseases.

Orange bell peppers – They contain carotenoid zeaxanthin which decreases the risk for eye degeneration. That also has a lot of vitamin C and more zeaxanthin per mouthful than any other eatable. Other orange foods like goji berries, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes and carrots are also similarly beneficial. They are also full of vitamin A, which increases night vision. And they have a carotene too that helps lower the risk of cataracts.

Broccoli –  Broccoli is great anti-inflammatory food and also encourage detoxification. Other vegetables like Brussels sprouts and cabbage also have similar properties.

Avocados – Avocados contain lutein which is as you know now is great for your eyes. They also contain other important eye nutrients such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and vitamin E. They also help in preventing macular degeneration and cataracts.
